Why Hire a General Contractor?

September 2024

If you want to leave your remodeling project to the professionals, here are top 3 reasons it pays to hire a general contractor to lead the way.

1. Once and Right

There’s a major sense of accomplishment that comes with the successful completion of DIY home improvement projects. But there’s a major sense of disappointment should that project fail or remain incomplete. While giving DIY projects the old college try is one thing, taking on dangerous tasks or ones that require more than your ability or your toolbox can handle is quite another.

If you do start a project and find you need to call in a pro to finish it, know that it could turn out to be even more expensive for them to fix your DIY errors than it would have been if you had hired them to do the job in the first place.

Time is money when it comes to home improvement projects. Hiring a general contractor can save you both. Aside from minding your bottom line as a homeowner, though, you can benefit from a general contractor’s experience in managing and completing many similar jobs in the past.

While you might be unsure of how to navigate all the steps of a multistage remodeling or renovation project, an experienced general contractor has seen it all and done it all many times. All you have to do now is enjoy the results.

2. Enjoy Peace of Mind

There’s a lot of responsibility and liability that goes along with a home improvement project, and most of it rides on a general contractor. You can rely on your general contractor to be licensed and insured, and know that everyone they are working with will also be licensed and insured. Accidents on the job site can harm workers and cause damage to your home, so you will want to ensure that everyone and everything under your roof is protected by worker’s compensation and liability insurance.

Additionally, an experienced general contractor knows how to comply with all local codes and will therefore ensure that the subcontractors comply with them as well. This means that all necessary permits will be procured and that projects will pass a future home inspection. Property owners can rest assured that the work is being done in a professional manner without cutting corners that could prove to be detrimental or even dangerous down the road.

3. No more Juggling

You have a lot on your plate. Personal and Professional An experienced general contractor is a master at juggling various tasks, including managing material deliveries and hiring subcontractors. This will make it much easier for you to go about your daily life, even if it does mean much of your home is covered in drop cloths.

Of course, you’ll be kept informed of everything all along the way. But instead of communicating with all those different workers and suppliers, you’ll have the general contractor as your main point of contact so there is no confusion as to the status of the work.

In Construction - Timing is everything

August 2024

When it comes to planning construction projects - timing is everything! As the end of summer approaches, and Labour Day is on the horizon, it is time to look to the Fall.

While many homeowners and property managers lean towards spring and summer for their building endeavors, the often-overlooked Autumn Season presents a host of benefits that make it an ideal time. Here is why…

Moderate Weather

Fall offers a pleasant and moderate climate in many regions. The heat of summer has subsided, and the frigid temperatures of Canadian winters have yet to set in. This provides ideal conditions for construction. It’s comfortable for workers, which can lead to productivity, and it’s easier on materials, reducing the risk of issues caused by extreme temperatures.

Less Rainfall

Fall tends to be drier compared to Spring and early Summer. Reduced rainfall means fewer weather-related delays and less mud and mess on your property. This can help your project stay on schedule and minimize cleanup efforts.

Extended Daylight

With the days gradually getting shorter, Fall still offers a decent amount of daylight for construction work. Longer daylight hours mean more productive workdays, potentially accelerating the project timeline.

Availability of Contractors

In some trades there may have more availability during the Fall season. The high demand for construction services in the Spring and Summer can lead to scheduling challenges. In the Fall, you may have an easier time securing the services of some trades, leading to a more streamlined planning process.

Landscaping Benefits

If your project involves landscaping or outdoor improvements, Fall is an excellent time. The cooler temperatures and increased moisture make it easier for plantings before winter arrives.

Preparation for Winter

Fall is the perfect time to complete projects that will help prepare your property for Winter. Addressing issues that damage the integrity of your property (damaged driveways, retaining walls etc.) before the harsh Winter weather arrives can help you save any costs that would result from future damage during Winter.

So since timing is everything in construction .... Fall is a prime time for property construction and renovation projects and enjoy the results before Winter arrives.

At Hammer Brothers we are known for our “client first” approach to meeting your needs. Our principles are honesty, follow thru and transparency. In fact our daily rally cry is that everything we do should be #builtexceptionally

Tips For Downsizing

July 2024

There are a few reasons why someone might downsize, maybe you’re an empty nester, maybe you’re moving from a house to an apartment or maybe you want to do less maintenance on your home so you’re moving to something smaller. Either way, downsizing can be overwhelming – follow our tips below to help you make the process more efficient.

1. Start as early as possible – It’s a good idea to start the downsizing process as soon as possible to give yourself time to properly sort through your house and give your possessions a respectful amount of thought. It’s wise to start at least 3 months in advance but we say the earlier the better! Set a pace for yourself and schedule time to declutter and pack based on the amount of time that you have in order to eliminate the pressure to do it all at the last minute.

2. Focus on one room at a time – The thought of decluttering your entire home at once can be overwhelming, especially if you have a lot of sentimental attachment to your belongings. Break it down into rooms or areas of your house and tackle it one step at a time.

3. Know your new space – Review your floor plans to familiarize yourself with the amount of space you will have and picture yourself living there. This will give you an idea of what you’ll want to incorporate into it and how it will be layed out. You’ll also have a better understanding of what furniture can stay and what furniture can go.

4. Consider your new lifestyle – Think about the type of lifestyle you will live when you get into your new home. Ask yourself if you will want to have space for knick-knacks and sentimental items, do you have room for oversized furniture? Will you want to entertain in this home? Should you keep certain things because of their high monetary value? This will give you a better understanding of what you’ll want to keep and what you’ll want to pass on and will make your decluttering and packing process more efficient. If you are getting rid of things that are of higher monetary value, consider having a garage sale or listing it for sale online.

5. Decluttering – The best way to start decluttering your items is to set up some categories, decide which options you want to choose when going through your items such as; keep, donate or sell, trash or recycle, pass it on etc… Having these basic rules set up in advance will help you get through the process more quickly instead of trying to think up a solution individually for each item. Take the time to organize your items as you root through and declutter. Not only will this help you when it comes time to pack, but it will give you a better sense of how your items should be set up when you get into your new home. Consider colour coding your items by room so that when it comes time to pack you can just compile the boxes by colour.

Often this process leads to looking at renovation or even expansion. At Hammer Brothers we are known for our “client first” approach to meeting your needs. Our principles are honesty, follow thru and transparency. In fact our daily rally cry is that everything we do should be #builtexceptionally

Renovating or Building?

June 2024

What makes more sense? Building a new home or renovating an existing one?

This is a question that homeowners and prospective homeowners often consider.
There isn’t a clear one-size-fits-all answer to this question because there are many factors that should be considered as you determine which one will work best for you. Here are some differences between building a new home and renovating an existing one.

1. Desired quality
How structurally sound is your existing home? (i.e. the electric wiring, plumbing and heating systems?). Renovating your new home will deny you a chance of enjoying modern technology. Its bathroom, showers, kitchen, and even the overall house design may not have the space to accommodate new heating, lighting, and other vital technologies.
Renovating your existing home means that you will retain most of its old infrastructure. A new home, on the other hand, comes with an entirely new infrastructure. All things being equal, wear and tear will necessitate repairs to your existing house sooner than in a new house.

2. Location
How do you like your current neighborhood? Have you developed strong emotional ties with your neighbors? What about your kids: Are they in love with their current school? If you are skeptical about moving to a new neighborhood, then renovating your current home would be a good idea.
However, then there could be that your current neighborhood isn’t as appealing or maybe you have gotten a chance and the finances to move to a trendier neighborhood. In that case, building a new home would be more fulfilling.

3. Budget
What is your current home’s worth and how much will it cost to renovate it? After renovations, will it be worth as much as its current worth plus the renovation costs or will it cost lower/higher? If its value will be higher, then renovating it would be a good Investment decision. If its value depreciates or stagnate, then renovations might not be the best course of action.

4. The Process
Renovating or building a new home will have their unique challenges that you must learn to live with, at least temporarily. In the part of renovations, you will have to spend a month or even five months with debris all over the place, noise, or even weeks of alternative accommodation. That’s all depending on the magnitude of renovations.

If you wish to demolish the current home and build a new one in its place, then you will be looking at six months of alternative accommodation or more. However, if you are planning to build on a different plot of land, then your life will continue undisturbed.

Also, don’t forget that renovating your house may limit you in terms of space. You can only either build out which means that your yard will shrink or build up which means that you will have local zoning laws to contend with.

It is also crucial to hire reputable contractors who have the skills and experience to complete the job to your satisfaction.

At Hammer Brothers our principles are honesty, follow thru and transparency. In fact our daily rally cry is that everything we do should be #builtexceptionally

Making the Most of the Season

May 2024

Spring is widely regarded as a busy and opportune time for construction projects for several factors. Firstly, the arrival of spring brings about favourable weather conditions, with milder temperatures and longer daylight hours, which are conducive to construction activities. The pleasant weather not only enhances work efficiency but also allows for better material application and faster project completion.

As a result, homeowners are willing to invest in such projects during the spring season to maximize their enjoyment of outdoor spaces and increase the overall value of their properties.

Outdoor living spaces have become increasingly popular in recent years, with more and more homeowners opting to create inviting and functional outdoor areas. This growing trend can be attributed to the desire for a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living, as well as the appeal of having a space to relax, entertain, and connect with nature right in the comfort of one’s own home.

Outdoor living spaces offer a unique opportunity to extend living areas beyond the confines of the house, providing a versatile and enjoyable space for various activities.

Undertaking construction projects during spring not only adds value to your property but also allows you to make the most of the favourable weather conditions.

Outdoor Living Spaces Elevate Your Home’s Appeal
Crafting outdoor living spaces during spring not only expands your living area but also elevates the aesthetic appeal of your home. Whether it’s a cozy patio, a charming deck, or a serene garden retreat, these spaces provide a perfect sanctuary for relaxation and entertainment. As the bloom of spring brings nature back to life, these outdoor spaces offer a tranquil escape from the everyday hustle and bustle and can greatly enhance the appeal of a property.

Secondary Additions Add Functionality and Value
Spring construction presents an ideal opportunity to add secondary structures to your property, such as a sunroom, a conservatory, or a guest house. These additions not only increase the functionality of your home but also boost its overall value. Utilizing the pleasant spring weather to create these extensions ensures that they are ready for enjoyment during the summer months, maximizing their utility.

Outbuildings Enhance Storage and Utility
Outbuildings, such as sheds, barns, or garages, play a crucial role in enhancing the storage and utility of your property. Spring construction allows for the efficient creation of these structures, providing ample space for storing tools, equipment, or vehicles. With the added benefit of increased property value, investing in outbuildings during spring proves to be a strategic decision for homeowners.

By investing in these additions, homeowners can enjoy their property more and increase its resale value in the long run.

It is also crucial to hire reputable contractors who have the skills and experience to complete the job to your satisfaction.

Why we joined the Builders Association.

April 2024

You’ve heard that saying, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.”

Well, both Tim and Steve think that both are true, especially if who you know is a group of people that know a lot about the industry you are in.

That is why we joined West End Home Builders Association (WEHBA), and we are so happy that we did! Here are a few reasons why:

First, being associated with a high calibre of people like WEHBA, helps you build a “professional support system.” This support of a robust and leveraged network is invaluable. For every obstacle you encounter, there is the likelihood that someone in your network has the tools, resources, or connections to solve it. This allows us to be in a unique position to solve a challenge that one of our clients are facing.

Second, you’ll have access to more information. Not every industry trend is public knowledge. Sometimes, new information or trends may be discussed in groups of people who are “on the site” every day. Having a solid network means you don’t have to rely solely on “what you hear”, but instead, you’ll have greater insight into your industry from people who know and, most importantly, do it every day.

Third, it is a fun way to think about “work”. We get together with people who “do what we do”, but we get to do so in an environment that is relaxed. This builds friendships not just collaborators. This form of networking has helped us improve our visibility within our community, but it has done so much more, it has exposed the community that we serve to us.

Fourth, it has connected us with a wider circle. When we joined WEHBA, we also became associated with colleagues in the Canadian Home Builders Association, Ontario Home Builders Association and became part of RenoMark Canada. These associations drive up our desire toward professionalism and encourage us to stay relevant, informed and practiced in all we do.

At Hammer Brothers our principles are honesty, follow thru and transparency. We are thrilled to work alongside local partners who put forth tremendous effort and devotion into bettering our communities.

We look forward to new opportunities along the Hammer Brothers Way - #builtexceptionally

Reasons to Hire a General Contractor

March 2024

If you want to leave your remodeling project to the professionals, here are top 3 reasons it pays to hire a general contractor to lead the way.

1. Save Money and Time

Home improvement projects can be costly and time-consuming affairs. As a budget-minded homeowner, you are able to review estimates from various professionals as well as choose more economical materials and upgrades depending on the scope of the project.

However, you won’t have as much room to negotiate when it comes to the availability of that labor and those materials. A general contractor takes over the responsibility of scheduling the project so that materials are procured and tasks are completed as close to the given timeline as possible.

General contractors are used to scheduling work and supply deliveries around busy subcontractors who are likely juggling multiple jobs in addition to yours. An experienced general contractor will have a slush fund to draw from as necessary to keep all subcontractors paid on time. This means that no one will threaten to walk off the job because of lack of pay, and your project will keep going according to schedule.

2. Take Advantage of Established Working Partnerships

A general contractor with years of experience will have likely formed strong working partnerships with a variety of subcontractors and suppliers.

That’s very good news for you as the homeowner.

For one, it means that those subcontractors and suppliers are reliable, as the general contractor has come to know and trust them based on their having many good experiences with them in the past. Reputation is everything in the home improvement industry, and everyone from general contractors to suppliers to subcontractors prefer to work with others who are known for keeping their word.

These strong relationships could also benefit your bottom line. General contractors are often able to get better pricing, both in terms of supplies and labor, especially if it means that a GC will be needing more of both for future projects. When a general contractor is fair and the working experience is a pleasant one, this bodes well for the timely completion of your project.

3. Have it Done Once, Have it Done Right

PROVEN WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR HOME’S VALUE

February 2024

Your home isn’t just a place for you to rest your head at the end of the day, it’s also a large financial investment. In fact, purchasing a home is one of the biggest monetary moves many people make in their lifetimes. In order to safeguard your finances, you should proactively work to increase the value of your home for this reason. Whether you actively plan to sell your home or simply want to prepare in case you need to sell in the future, increasing your home’s value will help prevent you from losing money on your substantial investment. Here are three ways to increase your home’s value, continue reading.

BE PROACTIVE ABOUT PREVENTING DAMAGE
You can attract buyers to your home if they know that it will last long after they sign the final papers. To prove to potential buyers that your home will look as good as it did on selling day for years to come, it’s essential to proactively work toward preventing damage. There are several ways to prevent damage in your home, which includes installing impact-resistant windows, adding water shutoff devices, or sealcoating your driveway to prevent unattractive cracks or excessive weathering. Knowing that you took the time to protect and care for your home will add value to it, as potential buyers won’t have to worry as much about making extensive repairs in the future.

BEAUTIFY YOUR HOME’S EXTERIOR
Curb appeal plays a massive role in determining your home’s value. Even if your home has a breathtaking interior, if your home appears dirty, worn, or unkempt from the street, few people will make it past the front door to give it a closer look. It’s essential to prioritize improving your home’s exterior. Considering new siding or new doors and windows can have a transformative impact.

INCREASE YOUR PROPERTY’S LIVING SPACE
If you have the ability to make a bigger investment in your home, consider increasing its size. While the up-front costs may be steep, increasing your home’s square footage can have an enormous impact on its overall value. Particularly value-increasing upgrades include adding on additional bathrooms or expanding your kitchen. You don’t always need to knock down walls in order to increase your home’s potential living space, though. Additional ways to provide more room on your property include building a deck or finishing your basement.

Siding is an all Season Job

January 2024

Baby, it’s cold outside….. and inside???

If you live in an older home, from November to April it probably IS cold inside. Obviously, we all expect to be cold when we go outside. But no matter how much we prepare for the cold, we still want to go inside to warm up after a while.

So where do you go to warm up if the walls of your home are so thin that you can literally feel a chill blowing in with every gust of wind? If this sounds familiar, it might be time for new siding and exterior insulation.

You might be asking yourself: how does new siding with a thin layer of foam insulation make such a difference? There are three main factors at work, specific to older homes:

1.       THINNER WALL = LESS INSULATION

2.       MORE STUDS IN THE WALL = LESS INSULATION

3.       POORLY SEALED WALLS

The good news is that Siding and exterior insulation CAN be Installed in the Winter Months

That’s right, there is no reason to put off re-siding a home, and replacing that insulation too, just because there is snow on the ground.

HOW WE CAN HELP ?:

Interior and exterior renovations or new builds. Shutters, siding, and even windows and doors. No matter the season - Hammer Brothers is ready.

Reflection and Gratitude

December 2023

This time of year lends itself naturally to both reflection and gratitude.

Whether its the festive music, or the longer nights, or even just the serene invitation that a year end brings, it is a natural time to look back and also give thanks.

2023 was a big year for Steve, Tim and Hammer Brothers.

It was the year we were accepted into the West End Home Builders Association, (Hamilton), and with it became members of the Ontario Home Builders Association and the Canadian Home Builders Association. We are also on our way to receiving a coveted “RenoMark” designation. For two best friends who just wanted to work together as carpenters, this was a big deal!

2023 was also the year we grew in our partnerships: adding several new partnership with builders for whom we have become a trusted trade. We were also invited to undertaken the role of General Contractor with several home renovation and build projects. We are humbled by these opportunities and seek to do our best to see more come our way.

2023 also saw us expanding our crew, adding to our great team. They are the backbone of Hammer Brothers!

Alright, that is the Reflection part. Now the Gratitude.

Thank you to our crew, to our sub trades, to all who partner with us. Most of all thank you to all our clients, past, present and future, who trust in the Hammer Brothers Way.

We are excited for 2024 and all that opportunities it offers to ensure all we do is #builtexceptionally

Milestone Moment

November 2023

Milestones are important.

We all have them. Anniversaries. Birthdays. A New Home. A finished project. We celebrate them. We remember them. We share them.

Steve, Tim and Hammer Brothers just celebrated a milestone moment.

We were recently accepted into the West End Home Builders Association, (Hamilton), and with it became members of the Ontario Home Builders Association and the Canadian Home Builders Association. We are also on our way to receiving a coveted “RenoMark” designation. These associations help us to grow our network and knowledge as we seek to continue to enhance our skills sets to ensure all continues to be done with one goal - The Hammer Brothers Way - #builtexceptionally.

This is a big moment, a milestone, for Hammer Brothers. We started as two best friends doing something we loved – carpentry. Since those early days in 2011, we have evolved into a full service Builder who oversees complete structural renovations, wood siding, exterior windows and doors installation. We continue to partner with builders, and more recently have also undertaken the role of General Contractor with several home renovation and build projects. You can follow us on Facebook or Instagram to see the progress on some of our on going projects.

Milestones are meant to be shared, so we just wanted to share this one with you. Thank you to our crew, to our sub trades, to all who partner with us. Most of all thank you to all our clients, past, present and future, who trust in the Hammer Brothers Way.

Happy Thanksgiving

October 2023

We often write our blog about our trade, our business or maybe even our monthly happenings. But this month it is a little different.

There was told a story once about a lady who discussed why Thanksgiving was her favourite holiday. She said: “How can you be against Thanksgiving? We all celebrate it - Thanksgiving belongs to ALL of us. And everyone has something to be thankful for, no matter who we are. That’s why I love Thanksgiving.”

Now how do you disagree with that?

Steve and Tim (The Hammer Brothers) are thankful:

  • We are thankful for the opportunity to be in business with someone who has been a childhood friend.
  • We are thankful we get to do what we love most - carpentry.
  • We are grateful for the General Contractors and builders who trust us  .
  • We are grateful for all the clients we get to serve - big project or small one - it is their home - and they invite us in.
  • We are grateful for our families that support, and our friends who encourage us.
  • We are grateful for our Hammer Brothers Crew - they gives us the confidence to say that all we do – we do with one objective – The Hammer Brothers Way - to ensure it is #builtexceptionally.

From our family to yours, a hearty and Happy Thanksgiving.

Steve and Tim

Why Fall and Winter are the Best Time to Start Your Renovation

September 2023

Summer is over! Yes, sorry for the bad news, but if you’re not lucky to be living in a tropical country, autumn is here. But don’t we all love the seasons' natural colours?

However, you might have dreamed a lot about a renovation project this summer, and all suppliers and installers were busy right? That’s why now is the best time!

Indeed, Autumn is the ideal time here is why….

Allows Time for Planning
A lot goes into a project long before the crew shows up to begin demolition or construction. Designing the perfect space for you and your budget is a detailed process. Even if you already have plans drawn, you need to consider that it takes time to make adjustments and ensure you get what you’re looking for within your budget.

If the idea of having your home under construction during the holidays is your worst nightmare, don’t worry! You can use this time for design and planning to get ahead of the game. You’ll have your home uninterrupted for the holidays and be ready to hit the ground running on building your new space in the new year.

Helps You Take Advantage of the Lull
Since so many people think they need to wait for the warm weather to return before embarking on a home building or renovation project, business for builders tends to slow down in the Winter. Now that you know there’s no need to wait, take the opportunity to meet with your contractor before he’s swamped with the Spring rush.

Gives You Opporttunity To Think About Your Timeline
Are you hoping to have your remodel done in time for Spring cleaning? If you’re aiming to have your project completed by Spring or Summer, you need to start now.

There are many factors that determine the timeline of your project, from the size of the project to design revisions, etc. But one thing is certain: if you have a deadline in mind for your home project, now is the time to start talking to your builder.

Next Step: Talk to the pros
This is where the Hammer Brothers difference comes in. Whether it's a complete structural renovation, wood siding, exterior windows and doors installation, or something more, let us show you the difference working with Hammer Brothers makes. With decades of experience, we will help you every step of the way to ensure it is #builtexceptionally.

Signs Your Siding Needs Replacing

August 2023

Summer time is often a time for some relaxation. Getting away, exploring and just resting seems to top our lists. But summer is a time also for a different type of ‘refreshing’ and that is some refreshing on the exterior of our home.

The siding on your home is really important. It protects your house from the elements, provides insulation that keeps your energy bills low, and provides curb appeal to your home exterior. When your siding is not doing its job, it is a hassle to say the least.

Even though home maintenance and siding replacement might seem daunting, it doesn’t have to be. Steve and Tim - Hammer Brothers understand that replacing your siding is one of the most important investments you will ever make.

We’ve put together a list of some indicators that your siding needs to be replaced:

1. Visible Rot
Rot weakens your siding, which causes it to become ineffective over time. Rot also spreads very quickly. If your siding has obvious signs of rotting or crumbling, we can help. We may be able to do a repair job on your siding if caught early enough, but if not, it will likely need to be completely replaced.

2. Increase in Energy Bill
If you’ve noticed an increase in your energy bill lately, it may be a sign that the insulation in your home is not doing its job. Oftentimes, the problem is with the siding. Cracks, holes, and damage to your siding may be the culprit of your high energy bills. Often replacing your current siding with a siding that has high insulation can increase energy efficiency.

3. Cracked or Loose Planks
Homeowners know that - well - weather happens! It, or another type of accident, can cause your siding planks to become cracked or loose, so a repair or replacement is almost always necessary. Since loose siding can make your home more vulnerable to moisture and pests, it is wise to address the issue as soon as possible.

4. Faded Color
Aside from being unpleasant to look at, faded color on your siding is a good indication that it is time for a replacement. Hammer Brothers offers several styles of siding, we are one of the best suppliers of Wood Siding which resists peeling, chipping, cracking, and fading, and keeps your home looking good for longer, plus is more economical.

5. Water Stains and Peeling Paint Inside Your Home
It may be easy to assume that all problems with your siding will manifest on the exterior of your home, but this is not true. If you notice peeling wallpaper, peeling paint, or water stains inside your home, it may be time for a siding replacement. Peeling wallpaper and paint are a sign that moisture is entering your home, which could lead to more pressing issues, such as the presence of mold and rot in your home.

Next Step: Talk to the pros
This is where the Hammer Brothers difference comes in. We specialize in exterior renovations that add maximum protection, value and appeal. Whatever your goals, from a new look, added efficiency or less maintenance, our team can help.

SUMMER TIME

July 2023

Saying no is always more tempting than saying yes. Doing so saves us time or money. Often both.

For example, doing that car repair will cost you time without your car and maybe $399. Choose not to do the repair and you'll save you all that cash, plus a give you time to use and enjoy your car. The cost of inaction is more difficult to see.

At Hammer Brothers we can't accurately gauge the cost of postponing that repair, but one of the things that we have seen is that when it coming to Siding, the in action of not replacing tired siding - it always has a cost!

This is why it is important not to ignore the value a Siding Renovation can bring to your home, both financially and visually. Here are some reasons why:

1. Weather and time leave a mark

As one of the first layers of defence for your home, the siding will eventually show wear over time.  Furthermore, damaged siding invites the risk of structural issues, mould, and lower energy efficiency overall. However, from a practical perspective, upgrading your siding is always worthwhile. Even if you keep the same look and style, that change adds protection, efficiency, and home value that new buyers will notice and appreciate.

2. It’s a cost-effective new look.

If your home is at a point where it looks aged or just isn’t standing out from other houses, it’s time for a change. Transforming landscape, replacing all the windows, even a fresh coat of paint can do the trick. But, consider siding. It is often less expensive and gives a fresh feel and a sense of and add a sense of extra life to the home.

3. New material can add appeal.
Siding materials such as vinyl or wood siding add value, new looks, durability, low maintenance and energy efficiency. That’s a lot of appeals to pack into some siding, which doesn’t include the new look. It will also help make your home stand out even more.

Next Step: Talk to the pros
Choosing suitable materials and looking for your new siding can be manageable. However, since siding can last for the next 15-20 years, you want to make the right investment.

This is where the Hammer Brothers difference comes in. We specialize in exterior renovations that add maximum protection, value and appeal. Whatever your goals, from a new look, added efficiency or less maintenance, their team can help.

Regrettably, we often only contemplate the costs of action and disregard the costs of inaction. But it’s worth considering. For inaction often proves more costly in the long run.

Saying no is always more tempting than saying Yes.

June 2023

Summer time is a season which equals warmer temperatures, a break from school or a vacation from work, a little more recreation and some extra time with family and friends.

For Tim and Steve (the Hammer Brothers) it is a time for many of those things for us too, but it is also one of our busiest times of the year as we undertake several new projects. We are grateful for the strategic partnerships we have with several builders and to each and every home owner who invites us into their family over the summer to undertake a project with a single goal - that it will be #builtexceptionally.

The summer also launches for us an opportunity to thank our community by being a part of the Canada Day celebrations at Lake Pointe Park. We are proud to be one of the sponsors and hope many will come by our booth and look forward to meeting you on Saturday July 1st.

Over the summer, Hammer Brothers has also taken on several new larger General Contracting jobs - and we look forward to sharing these with you through our social media . Again, we are grateful to these families for inviting us to be part of their summer in this special way.

Whether it's a complete structural renovation, wood siding, exterior windows and doors installation, or something more, let us show you the difference working with Hammer Brothers makes. If Tim and Steve–  the Hammer Brothers - can help  - Contact us

Whatever you are doing this summer, we hope you will enjoy the summer together with those closest to you. We know, we will being enjoying the summer, The Hammer Brothers Way.

SPRING TIME – A GREAT TIME TO RENOVATE

May 2023

Springtime is more than just the best time to deep clean, it is also a great time to completely renovate. At Hammer Brothers Inc, we find that the Spring gets busy for us with requests, and we are good with that. In fact, we have compiled a list of the top reasons why Spring is the best time for a home renovation.

The weather - Springtime can be the best time to remodel your home because of the weather. It does not matter if you are remodeling the interior or exterior of your home, good weather is a must when taking things in and out, bringing equipment on site, ordering and storing supplies, digging a hole or two, dry walling, painting or doing whatever else you may need. During the Spring, the weather is just right, and if the sun is out, it’s an added bonus.

The feeling of renewal - People are often more motivated during the Spring because of the feeling of renewal that the season brings. This is why Spring Cleaning is so popular, because as people feel the weather start to change and the flowers begin to bloom, they have a strong desire to do that within themselves as well. This feeling that we get helps us look forward to something new in our lives after a long winter. Renovations fall well into that feeling.

Saving money - Starting your renovations in the Spring can help you to save money on supplies, because the demand gets higher for them in the Summer. Even if you decide to start your project in the Summer like many other people, getting your quote in the Spring would still be a great tactic to save money.

Many people are looking to move in the Summer - If you are planning on renovations or remodeling because you are thinking of selling or moving, the Spring is a great time to start because many people decide to move in the Summer. This will ensure that your house is renovated and on the market just in time for the boom of home hunters to see your newly renovated place.

If you aren’t selling your own home, renovating your house also adds value to the rest of your neighborhood, so it could potentially help your neighbours to sell their homes easier as well. When Summer rolls around, your house is renovated and you may have new people to make friends with around the neighbourhood!

Ultimately, the best time for you and your family to renovate is up to your schedules, budgets, and what kind of renovations you need done. But, it is great to keep these things in mind for the future if you are confused on when you should be renovating. These tips can help you to save money, and make the decision process a bit easier on you.

Whether it's a complete structural renovation, wood siding, exterior windows and doors installation, or something more, let us show you the difference working with Hammer Brothers makes. If Tim and Steve–  the Hammer Brothers - can help  - Contact us

Happy Renovating!

Our Hamilton Home Show Experience

April 2023

While Hammer Brothers has been in business since 2011, and both Tim and Steve bring over 40 years combined experience as tradesmen and carpenters, every once in a while we run into something that is totally new for us.

Recently, our participation in the Hamilton Home Show was one of those experiences.

We decided to set up a display at the Hamilton Home Show for several reasons:

1. Increase Brand Awareness – we have been working on our brand this past year a great deal – we call it “The Hammer Brothers Way - #builtexceptionally”. We do believe we do our craft differently, we hold to four principles pretty unreservedly – commitment, honesty, follow thru and quality – and we wanted to tell people about it.

2. We wanted to meet People - The vast majority of our business is by referral from satisfied past clients, and through key partnerships we have with trusted builders such as Whitehall, Scott Homes, Chatsworth Fine Homes, Stoneshore Custom Homes and Rockcliff Custom Homes to name a few. We wanted to meet new people and tell them about our company.

3. Boost Our Business – We think we have a pretty amazing team. We have five exceptional crews, made up of co-workers who have been with us almost from the start. They do exceptional work, and we wanted to keep them busy (and us too).

So, let us tell you about our experience at the Hamilton Home Show – it was exceptional!

We achieved our goals, gave away fantastic swag (including very popular "Hammer Brother foam hammers”), showed off some of our work, told others about the Hammer Brothers Way and left feeling good about it all. You can see some of the photos on our social media

If we met you at the Hamilton Home Show – we just want to say – thank you! If we didn’t – well how about connecting now? Whether it's a complete structural renovation, wood siding, exterior windows and doors installation, or something more, let us show you the difference working with Hammer Brothers makes.

Why Hire Local?

March 2023

You have decided it is time for a home renovation, or maybe it’s an addition, or maybe just some exterior work on your siding or roof. Your home is your “castle” and so now comes the hard part – who will help? You have heard the horror stories and so you know the importance of selecting a highly reputed home renovation company for your project. You know the “big names”, but you wonder about a more personalized local approach?

In this blog post, we will share the top 3 benefits of choosing a local firm for your next project and why this choice should be given serious consideration.

Deeper Understanding of the Local Market - While it may sound appealing to hire a general contractor that boasts national repute, their limited understanding of the local market sometimes poses a significant challenge. These companies often rely on outsourcing many of the tasks to sub trades you are not familiar with and do not have direct follow up with.

On the contrary, a local contractor often possesses a deep-rooted understanding of the local market and resources. They are well aware of local construction issues, have many times have a local based team (or access to local trades who they work with on a regular basis). They also utilize local suppliers to ensure the correct type of labour, material, and other resources.

Unhindered Communication - A renovation or construction project requires a lot of collaboration between the owner and the contractor. From conception to completion, the tasks will require a lot of input from all to ensure the project moves along smoothly. Arguably, face-to-face are far more convenient than the unending back-and-forth sending of formal emails.

On the same note, one of the biggest problems project owners face is finding a reliable point of contact for emergencies. In this regard, local contractors are easier to reach as they reside in the area and are almost always accessible. Consequently, they easily keep you in the loop throughout the construction process.

Local Economy Thrives - In today’s age and era, a community expects a local business to give back to or support the local community in some way. As a business, you can do this by hiring a local general contractor who will ultimately hire local labour and thereby create jobs for the community.

While you will enjoy the contentment of knowing that you have served a good cause by indirectly creating jobs for your local community, your community will also cherish you as a compassionate and reliable local business. In the end, both the local economy and your business will thrive.

ABOUT HAMMER BROTHERS - We are a locally owned commercial construction company that has been serving Hamilton, and Halton and its community for over a decade. Whether it's a complete structural renovation, wood siding, exterior windows and doors installation, or something more, let us show you the difference working with Hammer Brothers makes.  Need general contracting services?
